Pinot Pack

A$211.00

There is white wine, red wine and then there is Pinot Noir.

This enigmatic variety can present as light and ethereal, medium bodied and spicy or full and weighty but, for me, it must always have one thing; ‘Pinosity’.

These the 6 best Pinots from my huge tasting this month. A spectrum of beautiful examples from all over the world.

2021 Maressa Pinot Noir, Mornington Peninsula, Vic

LIGHT | DRY | CURRANT

Created by generational wine merchant David Fesq and made from the Mandala vineyards. Bright, sweet red fruits make this very drinkable and more-ish. Flavours of cranberry juice, hint of blackcurrant cordial. Finishes even and dry.

2021 Ashton Hills ‘Piccadilly Valley’ Pinot Noir, Adelaide Hills SA

MEDIUM | DRY | PLUM

From vineyards surrounding the Ashton Hills Estate in the beautiful Adelaide Hills, this wine is layered mix of red berries, cherry and a hint of spice. A slightly bigger style of Pinot, with hints of oak and spice, it is still balanced and elegant.

2021 Brokenwood Pinot Noir, Beechworth Vic

LIGHT | JUICY | CRANBERRY

Brokenwood, an important producer in NSW Hunter Valley, have made Pinot from Beechworth’s Indigo Vineyard for 20 years. This vintage is simply outstanding; strawberry, cranberry and a hint of green leaves. Lively mid-palate, long and more-ish.

2020 Domaine Maire & Fils ‘Grand Minéral’ Pinot Noir, Côtes du Jura France

MEDIUM | DRY | BRAMBLE

From one of the largest wine growers in the Jura, this is the best wine I have tasted from this producer; a hint of bramble and a whiff of smoke overlay blackberry and a keen minerality, with a drying finish.

2020 Palliser Estate Pencarrow Pinot Noir, Martinborough NZ

MEDIUM | DRY | CHERRY & FIG

Possibly an example of the entry level wine outdoing the more expensive ones, the Pencarrow has, for a long time overdelivered. Classic Martinborough characters of sour cherry and a hint of ‘undergrowth’, fresh red fruits finish clean and dry.

2019 TarraWarra Estate Pinot Noir, Yarra Valley Vic

FULL | DRY | BLACK CHERRY

A fantastic vintage from Yarra Valley institution, TarraWarra Estate. At the fuller end of the Pinot spectrum, Initially nicely perfumed, there are aromas of dark fruits, charred barrels and a hint of eucalypt. The palate is lightly resinous, with hints of spice.
